Sustainability is the key to assuring countless adventures in the years to come
Our existence as an outdoor brand – and as individuals who constantly thirst for new outdoor experiences – is closely linked to our environmental awareness and determination not to harm nature. We seek to make more efficient use of resources in everything we do, to find more environmentally friendly alternatives and to make our company as close to one hundred percent climate neutral as possible.
We aim to develop products with as little environmental impact as possible and as part of the design process we analyse the entire product life cycle. The life cycle consist of five essential areas: material; manufacturing; product handling; transportation; recycling and; waste management. We immerse ourselves in every one of these areas and constantly evaluate the impact on energy consumption, air pollution, carbon emission and water acidification – everything to find the best options from a sustainability perspective.
Certain development work is currently on hold in the absence of fully sustainable solutions. People depend on our stoves in the most demanding of environments and we are continuously researching alternatives to fossil fuels that do not compromise performance and operating reliability. There are, however, other areas where we can have an influence, areas where we also offer you, as our customer, the best possible solution that helps you reduce your energy consumption. Only by all of us working together we can ensure people can enjoy outdoor adventures for generations to come.
Products with a long life span are more environmentally friendly
When you see the Primus logo on a product, you can take this as a guarantee that it has been made to be a reliable friend that will see regular use for many, many years. By making outdoor equipment that is designed to last, we reduce the need to replace it. A Primus stove develops its own individual patina over the years while continuing to perform at its best, provided the user maintains it properly. That helps ensure that many owners never need to replace their stoves.
We consider this to be one of our most important commitments. Ultimately, this is about reducing our need for raw materials, the energy we use in production, how we transport our products and the way we package them. And as the majority of our products have replaceable parts and we continue to stock spare parts for old products, you can always replace worn components and further extend the life of your stove. If, for any reason, you still wish to replace your Primus product with a new one, our famous brand quality means there will always be a strong second hand market for your old equipment. Or why not give your old stove to someone else to have the pleasure of it for many years to come? If, against all odds, your Primus product were to be damaged beyond repair, its component parts can be recycled to produce new products.
Optimising your energy usage
In the case of a Primus stove that is used regularly over a ten-year period, the production process accounts for just ten percent of the stove’s total energy consumption. In other words, the fuel used in preparing food is the single biggest factor you can influence in reducing its environmental impact. And until we humans have developed an adequate alternative to fossil fuels, the biggest difference we can make is to use our stoves in the most fuel efficient way possible.
Our Eta stoves are about 80 percent efficient, which means they are almost twice as fuel efficient as conventional outdoor stoves. This not only reduces the amount of CO2 emissions from the stove but also emissions related to the production and transport of the fuel. In parallel with making our stoves more efficient, we also invest resources in helping to develop more environment friendly fuels.
Choose CO2 neutral gas
Primus gas is a carbon neutral fuel alternative. To compensate for the gas emissions of carbon dioxide and the metal container, we invest in the protection, restoration and reforestation. Because trees absorb CO2, the net contribution of CO2 from the gas is zero. We support the project Permanent Forest Sink Initiative, initiated by the Government of New Zealand which aims to replant and protect the large forest areas that has been devastated in favor of agriculture in New Zealand.
In addition to binding CO2, reforestation and protection of forests increases biodiversity, improves water quality and reduces risk of soil erosion and flooding. The forests covered by the project are protected for 99 years ahead and forestry is only allowed as a caring action.
